Wood floor rescued from the clutches of thick dark red paint
Mazon Flooring was approached by a client in Birmingham’s historic Jewellery Quarter to restore the wood flooring in a recently acquired apartment. The property had been purchased after a mortgage forfeiture, and the floor was in poor condition, hidden under a thick layer of paint with deep scratches in the surface.
Project Assessment
Upon inspecting the floor, we found that removing the paint layer would be a time-intensive task, especially as our heavy-duty belt sander was undergoing maintenance. While the Bona Flexisander was up to the job, it would require an extensive number of high-grit pads due to the heavy paint buildup. The client desired a rich, warm finish for the restored floor. After conducting test patches, we collectively decided on Bona Craft Oil 2K in the Clay colour for its natural and sophisticated appearance.
Stages of Work
- Initial Sanding
We started by tackling the thick paint layer using 24-grit sanding pads. However, these quickly clogged with debris and melted paint. Switching to 16-grit pads proved more effective, though the process consumed around 60 pads before we fully removed the surface coating. Once the paint was cleared, we progressed through sanding grits to smooth the surface and prepare it for finer sanding. - Smoothing and Refining the Surface
After removing the paint and initial scratches, we progressed to finer grits to refine the floor’s surface. Using a diamond-encrusted 120-grit sanding disc for the final stage, we eliminated any minor imperfections left from earlier passes. This meticulous sanding prepared the floor for the application of the finishing oil, ensuring a smooth and flawless base. Between each grit, we thoroughly vacuumed the surface to remove debris, preventing scratches or blemishes during the next stage. - Applying the Finish
To complete the transformation, we applied Bona Craft Oil 2K in the Clay shade. The oil was worked into the wood using wool pads and the Bona Flexisander in buffing mode. This process evenly distributed the finish, highlighting the wood’s natural grain while creating the deep, rich tone the client had envisioned. The result was a stunning and durable finish that modernised the space and revitalised the flooring.
Challenges and Results
This project underscored the importance of thorough preparation. Removing multiple layers of paint, varnish, and stain required patience, determination, and careful attention to detail. The restored wood floor not only met but exceeded the client’s expectations, transforming the apartment with a sleek, polished look that enhanced its character and value.
