Restoring a 100-Year-Old Pitch Pine Parquet Floor in Kidderminster

Project Overview

We were recently commissioned to carry out a wood floor sanding project on a 100-year-old solid pitch pine parquet floor in the reception room of a period property in Kidderminster. Laid in a classic basket weave pattern, the original floor had seen decades of use, with visible surface damage, scratches, paint marks, and several loose or unstable blocks.

Our goal was to bring the floor back to life through careful restoration, while preserving the character and charm of the aged timber — a challenge that required both craftsmanship and sensitivity to heritage materials.

The Wood Floor Sanding Challenge

As is often the case with older floors, restoration involved more than simply sanding. The parquet blocks, originally installed with a bitumen adhesive, had loosened in places, and the surface had accumulated layers of grime and historical wear. The client wanted a clean, refined finish — but without losing the patina that made the floor special.

This project was a true example of how wood floor sanding can enhance the beauty of period flooring while retaining its unique story.

Our Approach

We began by identifying and carefully lifting any loose or unstable parquet blocks. These were re-laid using a specialist adhesive compatible with the bitumen subfloor, ensuring long-term stability without compromising the original construction.

Instead of filling every small gap between blocks, we chose to leave minor spacing visible. This approach complemented the floor’s natural movement and helped preserve the aged aesthetic that defines heritage parquet flooring.

Precision Wood floor Sanding Stages

The wood floor sanding process was carried out in multiple stages to safely remove surface damage and restore the timber:

Bona Belt Sander: 40, 60, and 80 grit sanding for main floor areas

Rotary Edge Sanders: 40, 60, 80, and 100 grit for corners and edges

Bona Flexi Sander: 80 and 100 grit for fine finishing and a uniform result

By gradually progressing through the sanding grades, we were able to smooth the surface, eliminate paint marks and imperfections, and reveal the original warmth of the pitch pine — all without erasing the floor’s historical depth.

Finishing Touches

After sanding, the floor was thoroughly cleaned and prepared for sealing. We applied Bona Classic Primer, which enriched the timber’s natural tones, followed by two coats of Bona Traffic HD Go in a matt finish. This professional-grade lacquer offers high durability and a low-sheen appearance — ideal for showcasing the natural grain without glare.

The result was a rich, even surface that highlights the craftsmanship of the original parquet design while offering excellent resistance to daily use.

Results: A Transformed Reception Room

The completed wood floor sanding project exceeded expectations. The once-tired floor was revitalised, with the golden tones of the pitch pine and the intricate basketweave pattern now proudly on display.

Importantly, the floor didn’t look new — it looked right. Our work respected the age and heritage of the space, producing a surface that feels authentic, lived-in, and built to last.

Conclusion

This Kidderminster project is a perfect example of how professional wood floor sanding can revive historic floors while preserving their original character. Whether you’re dealing with parquet, floorboards, or engineered wood, the right approach to restoration can make all the difference — blending precision techniques with a respect for tradition.
