Bespoke Glazed Door Conversion – Adapting Existing Fixed Glazing
Mazon Flooring carefully dismantled and adapted the existing glazed sections to create the new pair of opening doors.
The works included:
- Careful removal and separation of the existing fixed glazed panels.
- Cutting and adapting the existing central pillar to accommodate the new door arrangement.
- Conversion of the original glazed panels into opening doors.
- Installation of new hinges to allow the adapted panels to be securely hung.
- Retention of the existing angles to ensure the new doors and latches met correctly when closed.
- Extension and modification of timber sections where required to ensure the horizontal rails aligned across the finished doors.
- Installation of new handles and latching mechanisms.
- Installation of five-lever locks at the base of the doors to provide additional security.
- Modification and reinstatement of the existing profiles around the altered sections.
- Filling, preparation and painting of the visible joints to blend the alterations into the existing structure.
Working with an existing structure meant that a number of details had to be resolved as the project progressed. The objective throughout was to retain as much of the original material as possible while ensuring the finished doors were practical, secure and visually consistent.
The main alteration was completed by Gavin and Hugo during one extended working day, with the finishing and painting bringing the overall works to approximately a day and a half.
The Result
The completed alteration provides the client with a practical new pair of opening doors while retaining much of the original glazed structure.
By adapting the existing panels rather than replacing the complete section, the team were able to create the required access while maintaining the appearance and character of the original orangery.
Careful alignment of the timber rails, profiles and central post helps the new doors sit naturally within the existing structure, while the new hinges, handles, latches and locks provide the functionality required for everyday use.
For Mazon Flooring, the project is a good example of the bespoke works and practical problem-solving that can sometimes be required alongside our core flooring services.
Not every project has an off-the-shelf solution. Where appropriate, our experienced team can look at the existing structure, understand what can be retained and develop a considered solution around the property and the wider works.
